Green Hill School is a Juvenile Rehabilitation (JR) facility that provides male youth with education and vocational training. With the recent passing of House Bill 1646, which allows youth to stay in residence up to age 25, and with a growing need to increase vocational training for jobs that are felon-friendly, Green Hill School is collaborating with the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI).
LIHI is one of the largest providers of Tiny House shelters for people experiencing homelessness. Over the past few weeks, Green Hill youth have been hard at work receiving construction training and building their first tiny home in the woodshop of the vocational school on campus. Together with LIHI, these youth are helping to stabilize and increase the safety of people experiencing homelessness in the Olympia area.
“Watching these young men grow in confidence, teamwork, leadership, problem solving and overcoming setbacks…this has been humbling,” says Larry Sartain, manager of the Tiny House project at Green Hill.
The school is seeking out sustainable funding to continue the LIHI partnership with the goal of building many more houses for those seeking shelter.
Join us in applauding youth at Green Hill as they add the final touches to a tiny house for someone in need this holiday season.
